“Microdosing” is the latest craze in today’s hectic society. It has been coined by people who are using small doses of psychedelics to improve their mood, focus, creativity, and mental health. The benefits of microdosing are often attributed to the fact that it is a lower dose than what one would use for recreational purposes.
If you want to learn more about this exciting subject, you came to the right place!
What is Microdosing?
Microdosing involves consuming about one-fifth to one-tenth of the normal dose used for recreational purposes. For mushrooms, that equates to about 100-500mg. This dosage is extremely variable from one person to another, so trial and error are often recommended to find the sweet spot.
While micro-dosing may induce only subtle changes that are not always noticeable by the user himself, research has shown that it can produce significant psychological benefits, which we’ll explore later on.
The origins of microdosing
The practice of microdosing unofficially began with the use of, invented by Albert Hofmann in 1938. According to the tale, Hofmann took low doses of every third day for several years and claimed that it improved his creativity, analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and even his ability to make love.
Though it’s not clear how much Hofmann was taking or what he was using as a “dose,” many experts have suggested that microdosing may be just what the doctor ordered for modern living (and highly recommended if you can’t afford therapy).
Around the second decade of the 21st century, Silicone Valley companies started to embrace the concept of microdosing, and many employees begin to experiment with it.
James Fadiman, a psychologist who has done extensive research on psychedelics and microdosing, published The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide: Safe, Therapeutic, and Sacred Journeys in 2011.
This book was aimed at those who wanted to use psychedelics for self-improvement and healing but did not want the hallucinogenic experience (which is often accompanied by anxiety or paranoia). Fadiman explained that microdosing allows users to benefit from the “hits” of LSD or psilocybin without altering their everyday personality while maintaining their job performance and social relationships.
How do you microdose?
The amount of mushrooms needed for a microdose varies depending on how potent they are. For most people, it ranges between 0.2 and 0.5 grams of fresh or dry mushrooms, which is enough to produce noticeable mental and creative effects.
Usually, these doses should be taken sub-perceptually – not enough to feel any visual or auditory changes in perception but still capable of reducing anxiety and producing a subtle shift in perspective on the world.
Although microdosing can have many benefits, some proponents say that it’s important to remember its limitations: it shouldn’t be used for treating serious mental disorders such as psychosis or clinical depression; high doses are often needed to treat those conditions, so keep that in mind before trying microdosing by yourself if you suffer from them!
Benefits of microdosing
The first documented study on the effects of microdosing was done by the Beckley Foundation in 2016 and was published in 2017.
Their findings showed that a low dose of psilocybin is related to increased functional connectivity within different brain networks, which could be linked with restorative cognitive patterns. This result supports the previous findings of Hofmann’s: “unexpected new vistas often opened up, and I experienced an interesting state similar to lucid dreaming (remaining aware while going through dream images).”
Since then, more studies have been conducted on this subject, and results show that microdosing can increase creativity levels, help individuals cope with depression, enhance mental performance (e.g., memory recall), reduce inflammation and improve relationships. In addition, microdosing could be used as a substitute for meditation.
How long will it take to feel its effects?
The benefits of microdosing will vary depending on what you want to achieve. Generally speaking, the cognitive benefits begin occurring after several days of consistent use and continue for up to four weeks.
When consumed regularly, this practice can improve concentration and creativity over the long term by improving blood flow in a specific part of the brain (the default mode network). This is very important since depression has been linked with reduced blood flow in that region.
Some recent studies even suggest that low doses of psychedelics can have therapeutic potential when treating anxiety disorders and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease.
If you want to improve your creativity and/or mental performance, it’s best to microdose regularly or even daily for a couple of months. You will notice that the more often you do it, the better the results are as long as you stay under 0.7 grams per day (the threshold at which most users begin to feel ‘stoned’).
Tips and advice
Microdosing is simple, but you should know that not everyone reacts to psychedelics in the same way. For example, some people will find it easier to microdose than others because they don’t get anxious or paranoid even on large doses of mushrooms. If you are a beginner, try and test your reactions to psilocybin before trying this method since it might not be right.
In addition, some types of mushrooms have more or less potency than others when it comes to psychoactive compounds (like psilocybin).
Psychedelics can be used at very low doses without any side effects, and they remain (for now) legal to consume. It’s important to remember that there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to psychedelics, but the good news is that microdosing has been thoroughly researched lately. A lot of data are available on its effects.
The future looks bright for this method, and even if it’s not the solution for everyone, microdosing is certainly a great way to explore one’s mind and find different mental states that we ignore in our everyday life.
